Pre-commercial thinning

The USDA Forest Service has published a pamphlet advising the use of pre-commercial thinning of Douglas Fir stands. This publication is especially helpful with forest practices on Lost Mountain Family Forest since the soils on the site are poor. Thinning decreases competition among the trees for naturally reduced nutrients in the poor soils.
